A potential US withdrawal from the 2015 Iran nuclear deal is fraught with the most negative scenarios and is hardly something to look forward to, French President Emmanuel Macron told the German weekly newsmagazine Der Spiegel.

The United States has expressed its opposition to the statement, jointly drafted by Russia and China, and, along with a number of European countries, is sabotaging support [for the initiative] on part of other countries. We are puzzled by such actions of American and European counterparts since our document is based on the text of the JCPOA and the UN Security Council resolution which was backed by the United States,” the source said.

According to the source, the draft statement gives NPT signatories an opportunity to express their support for the Iran nuclear deal at a critical moment for the international agreement and has already been backed by a number of countries.

BATTLE FOR WORLD / SPUTNIK NEWS – April 29, 2018: Commenting on Tehran’s warning that it will withdraw from the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty if Washington scraps the Iran nuclear deal, US political analyst Alexander Azadegan told Sputnik that the Islamic Republic should tread carefully on the issue.

Alexander Azadegan, professor of geopolitics from the University of California and chief editor of the website ImperiaNews, said that Europe is not ready for Tehran’s possible withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal and does not want to lose the advantages that the nuclear deal brought to European countries which are also against Iran’s pullout of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).

Azadegan recalled that US attacks on Iran began during the Obama presidency, when the White House extended the Iranian oil embargo.

“The Islamic Republic’s current response to all American claims is the result of activities by those politicians, who like [Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin] Netanyahu will now begin demonizing Iran and say that Tehran will produce an atomic bomb in the near future,” Azadegan said.

“Most likely, it will happen, which is why Iran should take an offensive, yet balanced, position. The US President does not pay attention to European allies and acts on orders from the Israeli lobby in Washington. Europe wants political and economic stability in Iran rather than a regime change, in order to invest in the Islamic Republic on a long-term basis. But Trump does not want this and relies on sanctions, a policy that that cannot last forever,” Azadegan underscored.

“This is wrong. The deal clearly states that missiles cannot have nuclear charges and Iran complies with this requirement. Iran strictly adheres to the JCPOA, showing maximum goodwill in the deal’s implementation. Currently, more liberals and reformers in Iran are starting to understand the price of American false promises and say that the US is not a partner that can be trusted,” Azadegan said.

Hamed Mousavi: Actually, most of the elite in the United States, including people in the intelligence community, and even recently a person like Mike Pompeo who is the head of the CIA and is now is being considered for secretary of state, have acknowledged that the nuclear deal is in fact in the interest of the United States.

Sputnik: Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has threatened Washington with severe consequences if Donald Trump scraps the accord. How do you think Tehran would respond?

Hamed Mousavi: I don’t think they have made a final decision in Iran regarding how to respond if Trump decides to leave the nuclear deal on May 12. I think there are three possible scenarios of Iran’s reaction. The first is that Iran continues the deal with the Europeans, Russia and China without the United States. The second scenario is Iran leaving the nuclear deal.

The third scenario, which has actually become a bit more popular among some segments of Iranian society, is to leave the NPT [Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons] altogether. Because people are very upset, even right now, even without the United States leaving the nuclear deal. In the past two years, Iran has really not benefited from the economic advantages it was supposed to receive under the deal. This has largely been because of the Trump administration’s constant threatening to unravel it.  The result of those threats, even without the United States leaving the deal, has been that a lot of businessmen in Europe and other countries are very concerned regarding investing in Iran. The result of that has in turn been that Iran has not received the economic benefits it was hoping to receive.

The White House announced Wednesday the hiring of lawyer Emmet Flood after disclosing the retirement of Ty Cobb, who for months has been the administration’s point person dealing with special counsel Robert Mueller.

It’s the latest shakeup for a legal team grappling with unresolved questions on how to protect the president from legal and political jeopardy in Mueller’s Russia probe, which is nearing the one-year mark.

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said that Cobb had been discussing the decision for weeks and would retire at the end of May and that Flood would be joining the White House staff to “represent the president and the administration against the Russia witch hunt.”

Sputnik: What do you make of this judgment; it seems that there have been precedents prior to this, but what do you make of it and what kind of response do you think we will get from Iran?

Eric Zuesse: Coincidentally or not, this ruling comes just two days after Israel’s Knesset or parliament passed a law allowing Prime Minister Netanyahu, virtually alone, to authorize and order any invasion which likeliest could be against Syria, Iran and/or Lebanon.

One has to understand that the issue here is basically fundamentalist, Sunni, royal Arabic families, including the Saudis. But also the Thanis of Qatar and the six royal families of the UAE and a few others against the leading Shiite majority country: Iran, which is a leading country in the areas of Syria and also very influential in Lebanon.

Sputnik: What are your thoughts on Iran’s real role in 9/11 attacks?

Eric Zuesse: The only evidence that was presented to that judge was that some of the 9/11 terrorists had passed through Iran; that’s it. There was no financing of the operation shown by that case and there was no consideration given whatsoever to other possible sources of financing of the operation.

US Officials: Israel Preparing For War With Iran, Seeking US Support

ZERO HEDGE – May 2, 2018: Not that there was much doubt who was behind it, but two days after “enemy” warplanes attacked a Syrian military base near Hama on Sunday, killing at least 11 Iranians and dozens of others, and nobody had yet “claimed responsibility” the attack, US officials told NBC that it was indeed Israeli F-15 fighter jets that struck the base, NBC News reported.

Ominously, the officials said Israel appears to be preparing for open warfare with Iran and is seeking U.S. help and support.

“On the list of the potentials for most likely live hostility around the world, the battle between Israel and Iran in Syria is at the top of the list right now,” said one senior U.S. official.

Meanwhile, in a potential hint at the upcoming conflict, Haaretz writes that two and a half weeks after the bombing in which seven members of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards were killed at the T4 base in Syria, Israel is bracing for an Iranian retaliation for the Syrian strikes (and if one isn’t forthcoming, well that’s what false flags are for).

As Haaretz writes, the Iranians’ response, despite their frequent threats of revenge, is being postponed, screwing up Iran’s war planning. It’s also possible that as time passes, Tehran is becoming more aware of the possible complex consequences of any action. Still, the working assumption of Israeli defense officials remains that such a response is highly probable.

The Iranians appear to have many options. Revenge could come on the Syrian border, from the Lebanese border via Hezbollah, directly from Iran by the launch of long-range missiles, or against an Israeli target abroad. In past decades Iran and Hezbollah took part, separately and together, in two attacks in Argentina, a suicide attack in Bulgaria and attempts to strike at Israeli diplomats and tourists in countries including India, Thailand and Azerbaijan.

In any case, Lebanon seems all but out of bounds until the country’s May 6 parliamentary elections, and amid Hezbollah’s fear of being portrayed as an Iranian puppet. The firing of missiles from Iran would exacerbate the claims about Tehran’s missile project a moment before a possible U.S. decision on May 12 to abandon the nuclear agreement. Also, a strike at a target far from the Middle East would require long preparation.

WASHINGTON POST – May 1, 2018: The highlight of the article says that special counsel Robert S. Mueller III raised the possibility of presidential subpoena in meeting with Trump’s legal team.

In a tense meeting in early March with the special counsel, President Trump’s lawyers insisted he had no obligation to talk with federal investigators probing Russia’s interference in the 2016 presidential campaign.

But Mueller responded that he had another option if Trump declined: He could issue a subpoena for the president to appear before a grand jury, according to four people familiar with the encounter.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has been granted the authority to declare war with only defense minister Avigdor Lieberman’s approval in extreme situations, according to Haaretz newspaper.

Condoleezza Rice: We’ll be ‘just fine’ if Trump leaves the Iran deal

WASHINGTON EXAMINER – May 1, 2018: Leaving the Iran nuclear agreement isn’t that big of a deal, former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said Tuesday.

“The allies love this deal, and I certainly hope that in their meeting with President Trump that [French President Emmanuel] Macron and [German Chancellor Angela] Merkel talk about ways to improve the deal if we’re going to stay in it,” Rice said on Fox News.

“But if we get out of this deal, it’s going to be just fine,” she said. “The Iranians, I think, will try and stay in because they do want that investment eventually to start flowing.”

Rice added that she would not have signed the Iran deal, and that while there is an argument to be made for staying in it to maintain U.S. alliances, there’s no real argument to stay.

“I would probably have stayed in for alliance management purposes, but I have no argument,” she said. “If the president decides to pull out of the deal, I have no argument with that.”
